Oral semaglutide in the UK is finally a reality. On 11 June 2026 the MHRA approved the Wegovy pill — the country's first oral GLP-1 weight-loss medicine — and private providers began dispensing it in early July 2026. What is oral semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — a medicine that mimics a natural gut hormone to reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying and help you feel full sooner. It is the same molecule inside Wegovy and Ozempic injections. The difference is the delivery: oral semaglutide packages it into a daily tablet with an absorption enhancer that helps a small amount survive the stomach.
Because so little of an oral dose is absorbed, the tablet strengths are much higher than the injection. That is why you will see doses of 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg rather than the milligram fractions used for the pen. The 25 mg tablet is the full maintenance dose.
How well does oral semaglutide work?
The headline evidence comes from the OASIS 4 trial (2025). Over 64 weeks at the 25 mg dose, participants lost about 13.6% of their body weight on average, compared with about 2.2% on placebo. Among people who took it consistently, the average was closer to 16.6%, and around 30% lost at least 20% of their body weight.
For context, the injectable semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy pen) produced around 15% average loss in the STEP 1 trial. The two are broadly comparable — the choice usually comes down to whether you prefer a daily tablet or a weekly jab. How you take it: the dose ladder
Oral semaglutide is increased gradually to let your body adjust and to keep side effects manageable:
- 1.5 mg once daily (starter)
- then 4 mg
- then 9 mg
- then 25 mg (full maintenance)
You spend at least a month at each step, so it takes about three months (roughly 12 weeks) to reach the full 25 mg dose. The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach with no more than about 120 ml of plain water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking or taking other medicines. Who can get oral semaglutide?
A prescriber typically considers oral semaglutide for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. You will complete an online assessment; the prescriber decides suitability based on your health history, current medicines and goals. No legitimate provider can guarantee approval, and our recommended provider refunds you if the prescriber declines.
Only use GPhC-registered pharmacies or CQC-regulated clinics. Avoid any seller offering "compounded" semaglutide or unbranded vials — these are not MHRA-approved, their contents are unverified, and they carry real safety risks.
Side effects to expect
The most common side effects are gut-related and usually ease as your body adjusts: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and headache. They tend to be worst in the first days after a dose increase. Read our side effects guide for what to expect week by week.
Rarer but serious problems include pancreatitis, gallstones, dehydration that can strain the kidneys, and — in people with type 2 diabetes — low blood sugar. If you experience severe or persistent symptoms, seek medical help. You can report any suspected side effect to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme.
Is oral semaglutide on the NHS?
Not yet. As of mid-2026 the Wegovy pill is available only via private prescription. NHS funding would require a separate NICE appraisal, which had not been published at the time of writing. For now, access in the UK means going through a private provider.
